The bad news: While playing football in the backyard with Taylor, Bennett lost his balance and fell. Scott went over to see what happened, looked at his arm and thought it looked curved. Taylor came and fetched me from the front yard and I went to inspect his arm. We both agreed, after comparing it to the other arm that it didn't look quite right. But having no experience with broken arms we didn't know if this was the real thing or just another crying spell that happens so often in our house. Deciding we had better err on the side of caution when it comes to body parts that don't look quite right, I took him over to the Instacare to get it checked out. I was sure that nothing was wrong with it and was ready for the Dr. to give me the "you are over protective-go home" look. But after some x-rays we saw two broken bones in his forearm - bad enough that when I took the x-rays to his pediatrician the next day he took one look at them and referred me to an orthopedic surgeon. A week later I took him in to the surgeon who set the bones and put a cast on it. We are crossing our fingers that the bones decide to stay put. If not Bennett will have to go in for surgery. Bennett is doing remarkably well considering he is down to one arm. We have been quite surprised at how quickly he has adapted.
You would think that the doing remarkably well part is the good news. It is good news, but not the really good news. Bennett broke his left arm, which is attached to his left hand which is attached to an ever so precious comfort item - his thumb. He cannot suck it anymore. Not only is his cast around his thumb, he can't even bend his arm to get his thumb into his mouth. And again, surprisingly he has not complained once that he wants to suck and cannot. We are hoping beyond hope that the 6 weeks is enough time to break this bad little habit of his. Time will tell!
**Update - I Took Bennett back to the Dr. yesterday and his bones are staying put, so no surgery for him!
