Rewind 13+ years ago. Scott and I and some of my various relatives, whom I cannot remember decided to hike Timp. I thought it was a great idea. What I didn't think about was that I was out of shape and had done little to no hiking or exercise. I very distinctly remember that hike and how miserable I was. I only made it to the meadow and had to wait while the others made it to the top and then returned. I also vowed to myself then and there to remember how miserable I felt and to never, ever hike that again. I kept that vow until last Monday.
At the beginning of summer, Scott and I thought that Taylor was old enough to hike Timp. We talked to Taylor and he was excited to go. I also knew that hiking 15 miles didn't really fit into my training schedule anywhere for my half marathon, so we scheduled it right after the race. I was also pretty confident that if I could run 13 miles, I could certainly hike 15. And that I did. It is amazing the difference a little exercise can make!
The wildflowers were stunning. You know, you just can't beat Mother Nature. She does beautiful work.
Taylor did a great job. He became a pro at picking out the M&Ms from his trail mix and leaving the raisins. A man after my own heart. When we got to the saddle, a point where you can see the entire Utah and Salt Lake Valley his first response was "Wow." It was so worth it!
We were the 3rd group to make it to the top that day. The first was a couple that got engaged just a few minutes before we made it up. The second was an older man that hikes this route regularly. So regularly that the day we met him, was his 551st time. Yes, 551 times to the very top. That is amazing.
Till next time.....

I hike it when I was 10 and would definately go with you and my kids next year. We didn't make it to UT this summer, but lets plan on hiking it next year for sure!! I have a special place in my heart for the princess.
Mother Nature does do beautiful work. Congratulations on your summit. Maybe Taylor will be inspired and propose to his sweetheart some day at the top. Wow! I've made it to the top twice I think? Really hard hike. I cannot believe 551 times, or these people that "run" up it like it's no sweat.
How fun for you all. It is such a beautiful hike, and the view at the saddle is a great reward. Russ and Kay Lynn are coming for a few days around the 29th of September when the sibs are going to clean Grandma's house, and they are going to hike Timp while there are in Utah in prep for their big expedition. (Did I ever tell you they are hiking to Everest basecamp in October??) I was going to tell our family they also might want to hike that day, but you've beat them it it!!
That was beautiful! I have always wanted to do but never have. I guess I better do it sometime.
You are awesome! After 4 kids and in better shape then ever.
Frame that last picture! After hiking Timp 5 times I have become too out of shape to try it again. My few pictures on top are precious now. That older man that has done it 551 times must be in amazing shape.
I have only hiked it once but it was so worth it. There are people that train by running up Timp. I have never been in that good of shape.
WOW! You are inspiring! I think we're going to try this with a boy or two. Any inspiring suggestions? Spencer thinks your blog is hilarious and you're a great writer! I agree. You are funny. What great posts. We can totally relate to so many of them! Thanks for posting!
